A Cup of Comfort Anthologies

A Cup of Comfort stories weave powerful life lessons into vividly told tales. They are nonfiction stories that read like fiction, but always ring true. They are slice-of-life tales that make us think and care, that give insight and inspire positive action, and that entertain and enlighten. Stories must be uplifting, written in English, based on real people and events, and 1000 to 2000 words in length. $500 grand prize; $100 each for all other published stories. http://www.cupofcomfort.com/share.htm

Across the Board

Our style fits our content: thoughtful, authoritative, more akin to Harper's than to People magazine. We like the usual things - bright writing, solid research, illuminating quotes, sharp opinions. Our articles range from 1,000 to 3,500 words. Payment varies. The editors prefer detailed story proposals that show your writing style as well as the bare bones of your article. Double-spaced manuscripts submitted on speculation will be considered. If submitting by mail, address submissions to, Al Vogl, Across the Board, 845 Third Avenue, New York, NY 10022. Please enclose the usual self-addressed stamped envelope. Full guidelines

Adirondack Life

PAY: $.25 per published word Serves a region that is defined not by state borders but by environmental, political and economic boundaries. It is the only publication that addresses the unique natural and social aspects of New York State's Adirondack Park, and that gives those concerns local and national exposure. The magazine offers an important window into understanding this region. Along with a writer's query we like to see a few published stories. For new writers, the best way to break into the magazine is through departments, which, save for Adirondack Made (see below), run from 1,200 to 2,500 words. Features run from approximately 2,500 to 4,000 words. Guidelines

Tolkien, Fritz Leiber, and Katherine Kurtz, but with 90's sensibilities for a 90's audience. Include sexual content only as required by the story, but not excessive/porn. Please include a cover letter with publishing credits and submit the story in the standard format for fiction submissions. Enclose with the submission a self-addressed, stamped envelope with sufficient postage for return of the submission. Asimov's Science Fiction magazine
PAY: $.05+/word
In general, we're looking for "character oriented" stories, those in which the characters, rather than the science, provide the main focus for the reader's interest. Serious, thoughtful, yet accessible fiction will constitute the majority of our purchases, but there's always room for the humorous as well. Borderline fantasy is fine, but no Sword & Sorcery, please. Neither are we interested in explicit sex or violence. A good overview would be to consider that all fiction is written to examine or illuminate some aspect of human existence, but that in science fiction the backdrop you work against is the size of the Universe.

Century
PAY: $.04/word
Publishes stories in a broad spectrum of styles, subjects, and lengths (anywhere from 1,000 to 20,000 words). It's impossible for us to describe the kinds of fiction that appeal to us here — for a clear sense of that, you'll have to read an issue or two — but all the stories we print do share an element of the "speculative" or "fantastic," something tangible or intangible that separates them from most "mainstream" fiction (à la The New Yorker). Beyond that, we're looking for accomplished writing with polished prose, sharp detail and observation, and some depth beyond the surface level of the text. We are not publishing poetry at this time.

Corpse Blossoms
PAY: $.08 - $.10/word
Corpse Blossoms will be an unthemed anthology devoted to stories that inspire fear. Dark Fantasy? Suspense? Horror? We're not as interested in labels as we are in fear, what Lovecraft called "the oldest and strongest emotion of mankind." There are no solid rules here, aside from: Scare us. Scare yourself. Do it with style. Do it with elegance. Do it with brutality. Do it with subtlety. Most importantly: do it well. Show us your very best. Ghosts? Vampires? Zombies? Serial killers? The problem is that these topics have been fairly exhausted and thus allow little room to truly shock the reader. Simply put, unless you've got something really original or important to say on those subjects, no. The supernatural? Oh, indeed. But remember: the real world is often far more terrifying than anything that ever slouched and crept, glistening tentacles trailing, across the printed page. That said, we do love our otherworldly monsters -- especially when they tell us something about ourselves. Great characterization is a must. In short: Scary, original, and well-written.

A fully-interactive online publication bringing together innovative audio, video and print content in previously unimagined, mutually-supporting formats. We are putting the *new* back in new media and exploiting technology to the fullest. We lean neither to the left nor right but instead aim at the impartial rendering of ideas. Dragonfire's award-winning staff hails from more than 30 countries and has worked (or is still working) on such publications as Newsweek, The Economist, Time, Rolling Stone, CNN, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and more. We launch July 5th and are currently accepting pitches. Dragonfire publishes twice per month with daily updates until January 2006, when new issues will be published weekly. The site includes print, audio and video stories on news, politics, law, business, technology, science, medicine, health, culture, arts and entertainment. It also includes original works of fiction and poetry. Dragonfire is a nonprofit site that invites users to become members -- but absolutely no content will ever be restricted. In addition, Dragonfire will contain no banner ads and we will not force users to view an advertisement first before entering the site. Our mission is to bring good storytelling, important issues and exciting artists to our global audience. Editorial guidelines are available for PDF and Word download at www.dfire.org. Please review guidelines carefully *before* pitching. At this time we are not accepting unsolicited manuscripts for the Original Works section.
