Version Magazine

We are a Houston based magazine looking for freelance writers. VERSION is dedicating itself to producing high quality music, art and lifestyle coverage that is consistently ahead of the curve. Indeed, VERSION will not only report with its own spin on the news: it will create it. Its fearless, independent, and creative approach will appeal to a very powerful demographic - a stylish, ultra-modern readership with far-reaching interests and an unquenchable passion for new perspectives and new ideas. Our writers need to have a fresh, unique, and grabbing style. If it isn't new and exciting, it isn't Version. Here are some stories that we currently need writers for:

  • The cell phone - Cell phones have become many things. They're tools, status symbols, and a way to stay in touch in case of emergency. We're giving you the who, what, where and why of the cell phone craze, and a look at what it means for today's society.
  • The stereotype vs. the culture of Houston - Opening: The usual Texas stereotypes (that we're all about rodeos, rednecks, and rasslin) are in firm place around the country. With those stereotypes floating around, it's easy to forget that Houston is one of the most cultured cities in the U.S.
  • Rise of DJ's and scratch - A music style so original that it uses no musical instruments, the scratch style of music common in clubs today has no template in any other type of music. How was the DJ style of scratching created from, uh, scratch?
  • Expanding waistline clashes with media's view of women - We all know the stereotypes the media imposes upon women. There are only a handful of successful actresses who do not have the superslim supermodel body. So how ironic is it that as the famous women in our culture get smaller and smaller, the real women of the world are actually getting larger?
  • What do young girls do to become pro models? - How bad will good girls get to achieve a career in modeling? Does it stop at throwing up their dinner, a horrible practice in and of itself? Or can wannabe models get even more vicious and destructive?
  • We are also accepting any story ideas you might have.

It is important that you write in a style that lets the reader join you in the experience and conveys a sense of place. Tell us what sort of impact the area has on a person, what makes it special enough to send your friends there. If it's a piece on canoeing, biking, hiking, etc., we want a sense of the action--not a blow-by-blow rundown, but a vital account of the experience that lets readers join you in the adventure.
