American Magazine
PAY: $10 - $100 Seeking manuscript submissions of 300-500 words and 800-1000 words on topics related to life in America. Articles should be non-fiction and maintain a friendly, comfortable tone. We want readers to feel as though you are sharing news over a cup of tea, rather than just providing information. Be personal in your writing, where it's applicable. The magazine is divided into four major categories: American Life, American Discovery, American People and American Heroes. Our target audience is women who are married and have children, so appeal to their needs and interests. We look for topics related to money, health, home, family, culture and entertainment, among other things. But the key is to keep the target audience in mind at all times. They are probably more interested in contemporary thinkers and doers, rather than historical figures, for instance. We also accept query letters on all topics, and we do make assignments regularly. If you send a query, please include clips (published or unpublished), resources and experts you plan to use, and sidebars to go with your story. Writers are paid $10-100, depending on length of the piece and their experience, upon publication. They also receive two copies of the issue their article appears in. We are always seeking new writers who have stories to share, so please send us your work: mailto:editor@americanmagazine.com.

Welcomes stories and photos from its readers and freelance writers. We require that the author also provide us pictures and trail maps. Sled modification stories, where an individual has customized his or her sled. Be sure to tell us what parts were used and how much was spent overall! We also will want some pictures of the project sled, before and after. How-to stories describing how to modify or improve your sled, complete with pictures of the steps. Personality stories about interesting people of note in the snowmobile world. Again we would want several pictures of the story subject. Photos of trail adventures with family and friends, accompanied by an explanation of why the picture is particularly meaningful and identifying everyone in the photo, plus when and where it was taken. (These might be used in the magazine or in our Photo of the Week feature on the internet!) Photos and stories about vintage sleds. Anything interesting or newsworthy. If you're not sure if we would want your story, email us at: mailto:editor@amsnow.com

Analog
PAY: $.05 - $.08/word
Will consider material submitted by any writer, and consider it solely on the basis of merit. We are definitely eager to find and develop new, capable writers. We have no hard-and-fast editorial guidelines, because science fiction is such a broad field that I don't want to inhibit a new writer's thinking by imposing Thou Shalt Nots. Besides, a really good story can make an editor swallow his preconceived taboos. Basically, we publish science fiction stories. That is, stories in which some aspect of future science or technology is so integral to the plot that, if that aspect were removed, the story would collapse. Try to picture Mary Shelley's Frankenstein without the science and you'll see what I mean. No story!
http://www.analogsf.com/information/submissions.shtml

Andromeda Spaceways
PAY: AUS$1.25/word
We accept science fiction, fantasy and horror works up to 10,000 words in length. Longer works -- including serialised novels -- will be considered, but please contact us first about those. Submissions of up to 20,000 words are permitted from subscribers and from authors resident in Australia and New Zealand. (It costs a fortune for Aus & NZ authors to post a story that length to overseas markets - that's why we bend the guidelines for them.) Andromeda Spaceways is intended for a wide audience, so we don't want anything more than M rated: No gratuitous sex or graphic violence. We want the overall tone of ASIM to be light as opposed to the dark-and-gritty style that characterises so many other SF mags this day and age. This does not mean we only publish light humour pieces, though. Our readers are just as keen on traditional fantasy and hard science fiction. We're just not the best market for doom-laden go-nowhere stories which push the boundaries of the English language into new and unfortunate places. Given an otherwise even choice between angst and adventure, we'll grab the adventure.
http://www.andromedaspaceways.com/submissions.htm

Angelica
PAY: $.20/word
Uses stories with a contemporary setting only - no historical fiction. Stories should be 2,000 to 4,200 words. Suspense/thriller content is preferred. The story must have Christian elements in it: examples: an intense salvation experience in the story; a recommitment to Christ resulting from a life that had veered away from Christ; an indication that the character(s) have a faith in God, even if it's wavering, with the story showing somewhere that God is, in fact, faithful. Make sure that it is not preachy or contrived. We want it to fit naturally into the story line. Love stories are not something we are looking for unless the romance plays only a small, fairly insignificant role in the story. Angels, demons, supernatural, good vs. evil, end times etc., are desirable content along with any other type of good Christian fiction you know is selling on the market right now. No non-fiction. We are very selective about poetry. We are not interested in poetry about nature. We prefer intense pieces on faith, grace, salvation, forgiveness, etc.
http://www.angelicamagazine.com/writers_guideline.html

Angels on Earth®
PAY: $25 - $400
Publishes true stories about God's messengers at work in today's world. We are interested in stories of heavenly angels and stories involving humans who have played angelic roles in daily life. The best stories are those where the narrator has been positively affected in some distinct way. Look for unusual situations; we have a surplus of stories about illness and car accidents. We are also especially on the lookout for recent stories. A typical Angels on Earth story is first-person narrative written in dramatic style, with a spiritual point that the reader can "take away" and apply to his or her own life. It may be your own or someone else's story.

Asimov's Science Fiction magazine
PAY: $.05+/word
In general, we're looking for "character oriented" stories, those in which the characters, rather than the science, provide the main focus for the reader's interest. Serious, thoughtful, yet accessible fiction will constitute the majority of our purchases, but there's always room for the humorous as well. Borderline fantasy is fine, but no Sword & Sorcery, please. Neither are we interested in explicit sex or violence. A good overview would be to consider that all fiction is written to examine or illuminate some aspect of human existence, but that in science fiction the backdrop you work against is the size of the Universe.

Beyond that, we're looking for accomplished writing with polished prose, sharp detail and observation, and some depth beyond the surface level of the text. We are not publishing poetry at this time.

Chronogram is an outlet for reportage and point of view that are not often found in the mainstream media. We like to think of ourselves as "progressive" in the broadest sense: We believe that an enlightened, democratic society is attainable as long as citizens-our readers a small group among them-are informed with reliable information. Our writers write the critiques, praises, philosophizings and personal anecdotes that provide the detail to the larger picture, the colors to the outline (often coloring outside the lines).

Climbing Magazine
PAY: $.35/word
Our feature stories, the premium writing in the magazine, generally run 2000-4500 words and have a strong photographic component. We occasionally run particularly powerful prose by itself, without photos, often with an illustration. We’re less interested in formulaic “destinations” pieces than stories that give deeper insight into places and the people who climb at an area. Area histories, profiles of notable or unknown climbers, controversial issues, and first-person accounts are fair game. Humorous or unusual tales are especially welcome -- we and our readers love the weird and the wild, both in climbing and writing, whether it’s the uniqueness of the crag, a community, or a personality. We are always looking for stories that inspire. We receive MANY more interesting feature queries than we can use, so just because we decline to use your story does not mean we didn’t like it!

They are open to some unsolicited material again. Buys 1st rights. They do not want contemporary fiction set in the US, but do want historical American fiction or embellished accounts of true events. They also want stories set in Asia, South America, the CIS and Canada. They list buying puzzles in some directories, but have told me they rarely have money for puzzles. They don't buy poetry or anything dealing with boy-girl relationships.
