A Book in the Works...

Introduction

Although it was six o'clock in the evening the sun was still bright, making Kate Spry squint while looking up at Captain Delgado. Standing on a wooden support at the back of a motor home, he raised his hand for silence. Everyone around the vehicle was trying to talk at once.

When it became quiet the Captain placed his hands on the shoulders of a man and woman directly in front of where he stood. "Everyone, this is Mr. and Mrs. Alan Jenkins. Their daughter, Suzy, never returned home from this afternoon's soccer practice." Kate noticed that the woman was quite pale, as if she were going to faint. It brought back memories Kate wished to forget.

Then the Captain pointed to his left, all eyes shifted to a small card table where a deputy was sitting. "Sergeant Hopkins will hand everybody a map. You will pair up. One deputy and one volunteer. Each group will cover a two-block radius. Good luck." Kate recognized the sergeant from her volunteer work at the station. Like Kate, the sergeant arrived five years ago.

Just as they were about to get in line Kate sensed someone watching. Looking up over the motor home Kate noticed a drape slightly opened.

Fearing he'd be recognized, the watcher closed it quickly, turned and looked down at the form lying on the floor. The last thing he wanted was for anyone nosing around.

Pointing backward with her thumb towards the Victorian style two-story house, Kate whispered, "Mercy, did you see that?"

Mercy, shook her head no, vigorously, and placed a finger to her lips.

When it was Kate's turn to pick up a map, she winked at the sergeant. "Hi Sarge." The woman nodded back. "For this oldie, but goody, it's difficult not wanting to make someone pay, know what I mean?" The female sergeant agreed.

By eleven o'clock everyone had returned without success and were instructed to return at six the next morning.

About Ida

Ida Temple is a 62 year young aspiring writer. Although she is now working on a book of fiction, (suspense/mystery), she would like to set up a website to write articles and, possibly, sneak in some previews of her book. The site would focus on Neighborhood Watching. Ida has experience in this due to her volunteer work in Los Angeles County, with the Sheriff's Department as well as at the apartment house where she lived.
