I postulated a new virus: Parthenogenesis Inducing Virus, PIV for short.

The virus has no effect on adults, none whatsoever. All it does is interfere with the developing ova of girls long before they are born. The only (sic!) consequence is that when these girls grow up they tend to become pregnant spontaneously, without intercourse with a man. They can have no sons at all, only identical daughters, identical with their mothers as well as with each other. In other words: clones. These daughters are of course also infected.

As there are no symptoms in the first generation carriers, the virus spreads rapidly and unchecked. (I discussed the biological aspects of the virus with a medical doctor. His verdict: - horrible thought! - 'yes, not impossible at all.')

The novel 'PIV' explores the impact of the virus upon two generations of a single family living in Whangarei, New Zealand, and thus indirectly upon the wider society.

'PIV' starts with the discovery of the virus and examines the emotional problems of a young woman with a 'PIV' pregnancy and the effects on her marriage. The second part of the novel explores the development of her identical daughter in a society where no more boys get born, and probes the daughter's struggle to build a meaningful life.

by Leo Cappèl

A lighthearted and captivating tale of how an ordinary group of people with a common dream to sail the Pacific and a new found love of theatre life, use their collective talents to overcome their individual fears and weaknesses and realize their ambitions through friendship, inventiveness, courage and determination.

125mm x 200mm Paperback R.R.P $24.95 ISBN 0958212678 Publisher: Horizon Press New Zealand Publication

The novel is set in New Zealand - in the very location where the 2002 America's Cup will be sailed! The story and characters are fiction, but the locations are described exactly as they are in real life. I have drawn heavily on my experience with the theatre and with yachting.

A group of people from diverse backgrounds share a common dream: to build their own yachts and sail around the Pacific. They live in caravans or half finished yachts on a somewhat run-down boat yard for amateur boat builders in West Auckland, New Zealand.

Much of the story is told as seen through the eyes of a Swiss immigrant, who makes silver spoons for a living. He lives with his professional actress wife on an old sailing boat, which they are slowly restoring. The other main characters are an alcoholic fisherman, two young twins and an architect.

When the actress lands the leading role in a major stage production, the others become involved in various ways, and get hooked into theatre life. Meanwhile the fisherman's wife leaves him because of his alcoholism. Various events convince the man - wrongly! - she has gone to France, so he sells his half finished boat and his caravan to go looking for her.

All this inspires the architect to write a stage play himself. This gets performed just once, by a group of drama students, including the twins. No regular theatre will touch it.

The two story lines come to a head at much the same time, but now the group face a dilemma - they want to go sailing, they want to act, and they want to see the new play produced professionally. How can they reconcile the emotional pull of the stage with their desire to go sailing?

My three art 'needs' are writing, music and sculpting. Sculpting: I like combining materials, like wood-fired ceramics and bronze, and have exhibited widely. Music: my wife and I play old music, the older the better. Writing: poems, short stories and some of my books were published in Holland, Belgium and New Zealand. I also write musical stage plays, and enjoy seeing those come to life on stage. We love water sports. For 16 years we lived aboard a large ketch, which I designed and built myself in Auckland. We now live on tiny Kawau Island, off the New Zealand coast (shown below).
