What
happens when you add dark humor to issues of mental illness
and neurosis? You get such things as an anxiety disorder as
a narrator, appealing to its "victim" to recognize
the uses of anxiety; a repressed writer spending an afternoon
with God and reading his more risque material to him; an unfeeling
person trying to eek out some pain at his sister's deathbed;
a capitalist-psychiatric case study of "consumption deprivation
disorder"; and a narcissist whose downfall is engineered
by his more humanitarian alter ego.
With
thirteen stories, "Still Smiling at Twilight" includes
flash fiction as well as longer stories. Not indulgingly neurotic
or self-involved, the stories play with mental health issues
from a variety of angles. They use narrative style, structure,
and viewpoint to help bring out moods that aren't always possible
in conventional writing.
