BOOK REVIEW
"Writer's Guide to Book Editors, Publishers, and Literary Agents, 2001-2002: Who They Are! What They Want! And How to Win Them Over" by Jeff Herman Paperback - 984 Pages (7.375
x 9.125 in) ISBN 0761522166 @Book Description: The Writer's Guide to Book Editors, Publishers, and Literary Agents has become an indispensable tool for authors. Includes: * Names and specific areas of interest of
thousands of Bigger and better than ever before, Writer's Guide to Book Editors, Publishers, and Literary Agents, 2001-2002 is the quintessential author's reference against which others are measured. @Comments from Writers who use this book: "It's the most comprehensive book of its kind on the
market and I suggest readers always call the publishing house to confirm names. Getting a manuscript
to the right person is essential." "I've used Jeff Herman's
book for years - it's my bible when it comes to writing. The
one thing, however, is that a lot of agents, publishers, magazines, etc. in the book change addresses, etc. after printing.
Also, key people to contact change even more quickly. Use Herman's book as
a guideline and, prior to mailing your submission, call to double check the
address and contact person. You can gain a lot of information in a simple call." Everything I know
about doing a editor/agent/publisher mailing blitz, I learned from this book.
Have been using it for years. When I wrote my first non-fiction book proposal, I
followed Herman's approach. I usually go through and highlight all "possibilities"
for the the mainstream novel and inspirational genres. I nail down the
best query letter I can write then use Word 2000's Mail Merge feature to
do letters and labels. Off they go in the mail and when I get replies back
and I see the word "unfortunately", I read no further unless there's a
scribbled notation from the agent or editor. Since I'm limiting my TS activity
to almost nil, it's time to hit the book again and try to get the pitch
for my first novel out there. It's a very
handy reference tool and, when combined with their site online, keeps you
up-to-minute on what's what with the markets. I talked with Jeff on
several occasions and found him affable, intelligent and eager for my
success. He's just a normal guy with extraordinarily keen insights. @More on Jeff Herman... A Conversation With Jeff Herman By Claire E. White By Authorlink @Buy this book!
